The Importance of Online Safety for Children

A one-year-old can pick up a phone and be online in 5 seconds. Parents must understand the importance of online safety and take proactive measures to protect their little ones.

Online predators use the internet to target and exploit vulnerable children, often disguising themselves as trustworthy. Educate yourselves about the warning signs, implement safety measures and reduce the risk of our children falling victim to these predators.

Cyberbullying is a huge issue among children and adolescents. The anonymity provided by the internet, especially Snapchat, makes it easier for bullies to target their victims, leading to severe emotional and psychological trauma. By promoting a safe online environment and teaching our children how to react to cyberbullying, we can help them manage these horrible situations and protect their mental well-being.

Exposure to inappropriate content is another concern for parents. Explicit and potentially harmful materials are everywhere and are very harmful to our children's development. Parental control tools and teaching our children about safe browsing habits can limit their exposure to harmful content and foster a healthy online experience.

Overall, the importance of online safety for children can't be exaggerated. If you are proactive and informed, you can build a safer online environment for our little ones to explore and learn.

Parental Control Tools and Software

Parental control tools, apps & software are essential for the online safety of our children. Parents can monitor and control their children's online activities, preventing kids from accessing inappropriate content and interacting with potential dangers. Here are some popular parental control options.

1. Home WiFi & Broadband -Internet service providers (BT, Virgin) offer parental controls for your family.

Use a filter from your internet provider to control the content that you and your family see. Some providers allow different settings for each user.

2. Norton 360 - Anti Virus & parental control for the family - with an automated setup. Easy to set up- Available from 1 to 10 users. Works on PCs, Phones, Tablets etc. Needs to be installed on every device - Some parental oversight available-

Monitoring the Online Activities of Children

While parental control tools and software are valuable resources, monitoring our children's online activities goes beyond just installing software. Here are some effective strategies for monitoring children's online activities:

1. Rules, not guidelines - such as time limits, designated websites or apps, and appropriate online behaviour. Internet use is a privilege, not a right, with clear consequences, like 3 days offline and or no devices.

2. Keep devices in common areas: Use devices in common areas of the house, living room or kitchen for easy monitoring and no headphones.

3. Check browsers - Check children's browsing history to get an idea of the websites they visit and the content they consume. Identify potential risks or inappropriate online behaviour.

4. **Engage in open communication**: Establish a trusting relationship with your children, where they feel comfortable discussing their online experiences with you. Encourage them to come to you if they encounter anything that makes them uncomfortable or if they have any questions or concerns.

By actively monitoring our children's online activities, we can stay informed about their digital lives and address any potential issues before they escalate.

Games Consoles for Kids

Most game consoles have internet access, which means your child can go online and chat with other players or make in-game purchases. Many consoles have parental controls to manage which features are available to your child. On some devices, you can: turn off chat functions to stop your child from talking to people they don't know.

  • Restrict games based on age
  • Turn off in-game purchases, or set a limit.

Check the website for the console your child has for a parents section and details of features. Some games also allow you to change settings for that individual game.

PlayStation Family Management

On PlayStation consoles, you can set up a Family Manager account, which allows you to manage different accounts for different children/users. You can control restricting communication with other players, restricting content, setting play time controls and setting spending limits.
