Welcome to the first blog in a new series of blog posts here on BeSecureOnline.
In this series, we take a comprehensive review of the user safety information provided by social networking sites. Each site is scored across five key attributes:
In this first instalment of our series we turn our attention to Tinder.
Considered to be the world’s largest dating site, Tinder controversially allows children above 13 years of age to use its services. The site matches users based on location, preferences, age, political leanings and lifestyle. The most important of these is geographical location. Established in 2013, Tinder matches 30 million people daily. Once confirmed you can message each other. Swipe right you like, left carry on. Vanity Fair reports that Tinder promotes a culture of casual one night stands. In addition, health officials blame these apps for an increase in some sexually transmitted diseases.
Just a page long, that’s it. It barely reaches below the fold and offers very limited details. There are no videos, no bold or coloured text, and the page looks like it hasn’t been updated in months. However, this section advises caution over interacting and meeting with people for the first time, disclosing financial details and explicitly mentions sexually transmitted diseases (STD). All very helpful indeed and gives you certain idea of the sites true calling. Their user agreement for users residing outside European Union prevents users from suing Tinder other than through a Texas-based arbitration service.
Tinder’s health & safety section appears as if it was written up in less than a day. It is hard to state how poor their help and safety section is. Tinder seems to be totally disinterested in their users-wellbeing.
Disgraceful. The legal and privacy sections and the user license agreement are far more detailed than the health and safety section. The lack of video help is very telling.
